Careers

Economics develops skills that will be important to you long after you graduate. Your ability to analyze, deal with quantitative relationships, conduct research, and even speak to a group will serve you well no matter what your chosen profession. Not surprisingly, given Laurier Economics’ close ties with the Laurier Business Department, most Laurier economics students eventually find careers in the world of business and finance.

Faculty Experience

000_Johnson_headshot.jpgThe quality of our education system in Canada is a topic always under discussion. It’s also the subject matter of Dr. David Johnson’s current research projects, related to measuring the quality of elementary schools in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia using school test scores. The book describing his research, entitled Signposts of Success: Interpreting Ontario’s Elementary School Test Schools was a runner-up for the Donner Prize for best book in Canadian public policy in 2005.

At Laurier, Dr. Johnson teaches macroeconomics, an area where he concentrated his research for the first 15 years of his career.  After 25 years at Laurier, Dr. Johnson finds it both rewarding and enjoyable.

“I like to teach and challenge students to learn material well and at a deep level,” he says. “I enjoy my research and hope it contributes to better decision making in public policy.”
