Laurier a platinum sponsor at Codefest 2015

Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing

Oct 30/15

The City of Waterloo hosted Codefest over the Oct. 24 and 25 weekend at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI).

Codefest invites local tech talent and entrepreneurs from across the region, including student teams from Laurier, to create new mobile applications or websites from the city’s open data sets. For example, participants may use data on the city’s facilities, parks, street names and heritage buildings as their creative starting point.

Laurier was a platinum sponsor of the 36-hour hackathon. Chinh Hoang, a professor in Laurier’s Department of Physics and Computer Science, was an event judge while Paul Jessop, dean of Science, provided closing remarks at the awards ceremony.

Top prize was awarded to Timber, an application developed to track the health of city trees and report those in distress.

Hackathons are gaining popularity in Ontario’s cities and across university campuses, aligning with international mandates such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, designed to create accountable and transparent bodies of governance.

Additional information on Codefest 2015 can be found in the City of Waterloo’s event press release
